Beta Reading/Reader Report - Starting at $20

$0.00

Beta reading typically occurs either before or after developmental editing (to assess how well you’ve made corrections) and before any line or copy editing. While I may point out sentence-level trends in your writing that catch my attention, I will not actively be looking for them. If you are interested in consistent corrections in tone, pacing, grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. - please look at our Line Editing or Copy Editing services.

Beta Readers are a critical part of the early draft stages of writing, giving you a reader’s view of your story as a whole and the emotions your writing invokes. As a beta reader, my job is to make sure the story flows well, pulls a reader in, and keeps them engaged. I help give a bird's-eye review of pacing, character development, emotional impact, plot holes, and awkward phrasing as they stand.

In selecting this service, you’ll get:

  • A margin mark-up of my questions, comments, and concerns from a reader's perspective. I try to give these as close to ‘real time’ as possible, so I may run into a question that you answer later in the text (which is a good sign!). You’ll get my emotional reactions to characters and action while I’m in the moment, and any speculating I may be doing along the way!

  • A summary of my overall take on the work you’ve provided. This may include things like:

    • Trends in the writing style that tripped me as a reader: do you switch tenses frequently? Does the POV change too often?

    • Any personal writing ‘crutches’ I notice, e.g. heavy use of ‘slightly’ to soften actions, ‘starting’ actions rather than simply acting

    • Pacing notes: Did something feel rushed or drag on too long?

    • Consistency: do your characters sound and act consistently throughout? Are the characters varied from each other?

    • How I felt on the emotional journey through your work - was I gripped by the characters’ plight? Did I resonate with them, or did the characters fall flat?

    • The greatest strength in the writing - Everyone has one!

    • One or two ways the writing can be improved - because there is always room for improvement!

    • My suggestions for next steps with this work - would you benefit from developmental/structural editing to improve plot/character development, or should you move to line/copy editing to tighten up your prose?

    • Any well-known books, movies, or TV shows this work reminds me of or seems inspired by

    • Any tropes I pick up on

    • Any additional content warnings you may have missed in your notes

  • If you have any particular elements or concerns you want me to pay attention to, I’ll address those here as well. Some examples of things I’ve been asked:

    • Is the action/violence engaging, or fetishized?

    • Is there too much banter, or not enough?

    • Is the spice indulgent, or awkward?

    • Does the magic system make sense or feel overpowered?

    • Are there holes or inconsistencies in the worldbuilding? What would you like to see more of or know more about?

    • Is this info-dump too long, or just enough?

    • English is not my first language. Does this sound natural?

    • Did I leave enough clues to the plot twist, or did it come out of nowhere?
