Line Editing - $0.024 per word

Line editing comes after Developmental Edits and Beta Reads, can come before or be combined with Copy Editing, and comes before Sensitivity/Authenticity Readers, Formatting and Proofreading.

Line editing is one of the most important parts of the editing journey. Often combined with copy editing in the self-publishing world (see our packages), line editing is a sentence-level edit that focuses on tightening your language use so that each word holds the impact you intended. Where copyediting focuses on the technical aspects of spelling, punctuation, and grammar (what I call “SPAGedits” or spaghetti), line edits go a step further to include stylistic edits like tone, consistency, and character voice. A line editor will also catch your repeated phrases and crutch words, as well as suggest stronger or more precise language while still honoring your voice as a writer.

With this service, you’ll get:

  • In-line revisions using Track Changes (for Microsoft Word documents) or Suggestions (for Google Docs).

  • Margin notes detailing suggestions with more than one way forward.

  • A note on any repeated words, phrases, or writing crutches to help improve your craft for future projects.

  • A second pass on your changes (up to ~20% of your original manuscript, discounts on larger volumes).

Continuity Editing requires a very detailed and focused read. The turnaround time for this is about 3-6 weeks per book, depending on the length of your work and my current queue. Sample edits available on request at your consultation, or by email at admin@behindthemagic.net.
